Final Project
For my seventh concentration piece, I decided to paint an image of a sunset which I captured in a photo at the beach last summer. This project was my second ever water color project. It was a great experience, because I did not have much practice with watercolor before hand.
The first step was to use light blues, purples, and greys to begin creating the sunset and the clouds. I started light and gradually added darker and darker shades of watercolor to add the value and depth in the sunset. I then went in with yellow and oranges to create the reflection from the setting sun. Next, I painted the horizon line with a dark gray, and I began working on the water by using subtle pinks, yellows, and blues as my undertones. Then I began building up the intensity of the colors, and adding darker shades of blues to create the movement and appearance of the waves. At the end, I went back and added some shading to the painting with dark blues to add more depth to the painting.
Overall, I am happy with how this project turned out. I feel that I actually learned how to build up and blend watercolors as opposed to my last attempt at a watercolor painting. I feel that the colors that I chose to use added simplicity to the painting, and my techniques efficiently blended the colors to make them flow together.
